Ostertag Cloisonné Enamel Table Clock
Very rare and well-preserved Ostertag Art Deco chinoiserie desk clock, circa 1925–1932, in silver-plated brass (94 × 55 × 25 mm). The enamelled case, executed using the traditional doublé technique, features a refined polychrome decoration combining lacquer and cloisonné enamel, reflecting the strong Far Eastern influence in 1920s Paris, particularly following the 1925 Exposition.
This piece was created by Arnold Ostertag, a Swiss-born jeweller active on Place Vendôme in the early 1920s, now largely overlooked but known for his oriental-inspired creations.
The champagne guilloché dial displays the hours through the twelve Earthly Branches of the Chinese calendar and is centered with an enamel medallion depicting the longevity symbol 壽 (shòu).
The maker’s mark (JG with burin) corresponds to the silversmith Jacot-Guillarmod, Paris, 1924, confirming the quality of its Parisian production. The clock is fitted with a manual-winding mechanical movement.
The hinged case back rests on a matching base decorated with cloisonné enamel. The piece remains in excellent overall condition.
